Mr. E. Pfige, S.M., presided at yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. Lena Daly, who was yesterday convict- ' ed o! the theft or an overall from James ! Smith's, was sentenced, to 14 days' imj prisbnment. It. was explained by Mr. W. lE. Leciester, who appeared for the accused, that mention was made yesterday that when nccused came before the Court in September last she had been fined £2, This was not so, as she had been ordered to pay witnesses expenses amounting to 7s. She had also been admitted to a term of probation for sis months. The Magistrate said he. had given the case consideration, but thought that a term of imprisonment would have to be imposed. Thomas Albert Collins and M. Robert Wales were each sentenced' to 14 days' imprisonment for unlawfully deserting from the steamers Hurunui and Ruahine respectively. Denis Henry Freyer, 18 years of age, who'had failed to comply with the terms of a probation order, was ordered i Ito come up for sentence when called on j i within two years.
George Ruddell Dale appeared before Mr.. C. E. Orr-Walker, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court on' Tuesday on a charge of failing to maintain Ms wife. A remand til] 6th February was granted on the application of Senior Detective Cameron, as it was stated that since his arrest by- Detective Sinclair, Dale had admitted having, committed bigamy.
