KAIWARRA SCHOOL

COMPLAINT ABOUT DELAY

A communication from the Education Department to the effect that it was hoped to make a grant at an early date for preliminary work in connection with the uew ..achool at. .'Kaiwarra gave rise .to a discussion at the meeting''of the ■Wellington Education Board yesterday ' Mi\ E. A. Wright?, M.P., said that about twelve months ago the Minister paid a visit to the old school, and came to the conclusion that a new building I \vas urgently needed, andr he gave a definite promise that the work would b« proceeded with'. It was proposed to level the site, but When the Publio Works Department went into the matter they came to the conclusion that a retaining wall, at a considerable cost, would be necessary. Since then the whole matter had been held up. He thought that the board should make an urgent request that the- Department should go on with the work, and not procrastinate "any longer. The whole matter waa most extraordinary. Mr. T. Moss thought that it reflected anything but credit on the Department i for the manner, in which they had tackled the work at Kaiwarra. It was about time that some influence was brought to j bear on the Minister in order to get the work ahead. The chairman (Mr. E. P. Bishworth) said that the Public Works Department had made a charge 'of £15 15s for a report regarding the ;work, but the board had received nothing in return. Mr. C. I. Harkness: "It's another instance of what we might expect if tha Public Works Department takes ovor the construction of our schools." Mr. Wright moved that a strong protest should be made to the Department; with the request \that the work should be proceeded with, in accordance with the promise made by the Minjster. This was seconded by Mr. London and carried.
