GOOD DISPLAY OF CATTLE
(BY 0118 SPECIAL REPORTER.) . LEVIN, 30th January. Ideal weather conditions prevailed for ths opening of the Levin Show yesterday, and the attendance was veil up | frj the standard for a first day. From a quality point of view the show was a distinct credit to the district, and refleeted the excellence of the Levin climate in the good condition of both eheep and cattle exhibited. The entries were jn. excels of those of previons years, and the. present show is praying one of the most successful, yet ,held. Appended are the main award* for the first day :— COMPETITIONS. Best Boy Rider.—H. Bell (Levin). Be3t Girl Eider.—Grace Vickers (Levin). Driving Competition, for Gentlemen (single horse).—J. Horn (Ohau). Horse Walking Competition.—Si A. Broadbelt's (Levin) Carby. Sheep Dog L. G. Green's "pishhurst) William Boge. ■ , PAT SHEEP AND LAMBS. Competition in classes devoted to fat sheep and lambs wa3 very keen. Mr. F. Davies (Levin), as is usual, secured tha premier position, but his record was very closely followed up by Mr. Jack Kilsby (Levin)-and Mr. W. M. Simcox (Otaki). , - LINCOLN SHEEP. D. K. Buchanan (Wajkanae) was the only exhibitor in the Lincoln classes. SOUTHDOWNS. .There was no competition in Southdowns, B. H. Slack (Otaki Railway) being the only breeder represented. REGISTERED MILKING SHORTHORNS. Tlie Milking Shorthorns -were judged by S. G. Morgan (Woodville), and all the principal district breeders were rep-, resented. R. V. Brown (Weraroa) was! the meet successful, gaining six firsts and two .seconds, and the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association's special prize for best yearling ' heifer. G. H. Hadfield (Paraparaumu) secured the association's special for yearling bull. OtheT prize-takers were B. H-. Slack, B. H. Fyffe (Weraroa), and D. K. Buchanan (Waikanae). JERSEYS. There wag competition in the Jersey cattle classes, the splendid display of this popular breed being a feature of tho show. Mr. E. Eagle (C'artcrtou) was tho judge, and spoke hi terms of high praise of tho general quality of the animals exhibited. Tho cup for most points wag won by R. L. Horn (Chau). Qther prominent and successful exhibitors were S. Bowker, J.. Nicholson, and R. W. Evans. PIGS. The display of pigs was a particularly good one, there being a big increase on last _ year's figures. The quality was considered exceptionally good. The Central Development Farm, Ranald M'Don- ' a-ld-(Weraroa); and John Morgan .(We-' raroa) were the principal prize-takers. Mr,-Morgan securedthe Wellington Meat Exchange's gold medal for most poiute in classes for sows with litters, pigs for pork, and bacon pigs. The Central Development Farm scored the most point?, however, but the medal was not open to competition from Government institutions. Mr. Neilsen (Tiakitahuna) was..the judge, and spoke of the Berkshires as an exceptionally good class. Th^ Central, Development Farm's boatwas as good as could bo got anywhere. The pigs under 6ix..months shown ,by Mrs.. Pro'use were also well worthy of mention. ; CHAMPIONSHIPS. , Championships -k/i6 awarded as follow :—. :. Jersey 3ull : R. W.
