PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

! The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was hem last evening. Present : Mr. .J. W. M'Ewan (Mayor), and Councillor's C. P. Brockelbank, A. G. Steffensen, V. Jacobson, A J. Pointon, William Hay, G. Cook, W. P. Coles, and H. Jay. The Taita;, Cemetery Board requested the approval of the council to the purchase of- an area of land for extending 1 the cemetery, and recommending that failing purchase by negotiation the' land be taken under the Public Works Act. On the motion of the Mayor, the proposed purchase was approved. The Cemetery Board' further requested that the sum of £100 be placed on the councils estimates to enable the board to carry on for the coming year Councillor Brockelbank said it could not be expected that the' board could carry on without money. The board had recently do'he good work at the cemetery, and he^ moved that - the £100 be placed on the estimates. ' The motion was' seconded by Councillor Hay -and carried. >' ' . A lady resident of the borough claimed the sum of' £8 as compensation for a costume, etc., alleged to J>e damaged whilst workmen were tarflhg the foot-: path in Jackson street. Councillor Hay desired to know why notices as resolved by the council, had not been placed on the road when tarring operations were in progress. . . ■ Councillor Coles moved: "That the council regrets that it cannot meet the claim without, further investigation." Such an action would, he said, be a dangerous precedent. Councillor Steffensen seconded the motion, which was earned. . The Rugby Union desired to know if a. ground would be available for the union over ths stop, bank. The Town Clerk said that according to the agreement with the union it had already, the nght to a ground in this locality. It was resolved to notify the union accordingly. The engineer was authorised to open negotiations with the owner of two sections with a view to acquiring same to enable South street to *be made a' through street. The Mr. A. Cowie, -was granted his annual holiday. i
