SMOKE CONCERT

The 'Dominion Farmers' Institute Hall was the scene-last Thursday evening of a smoke concert in honour of the delegates attending the n fifth annual conference of the guild. " The function was most successful. The chair was occupied by Mr. L. Q. Hawk, the newly-elected president of the guild. He extended a welcome to the guests of the evening, who included the, chief executive officers of the banks. Mr. J. H. Baxter (Union Bank, Helensville) proposed the toast of "The Banks," and in doing so expressed guild members' appreciation of the frank and friendly attitude displayed by the authorities towards their staffs' organisation. - The good understanding between the banks and the guild was, he said, 'a worthy example to the community. The toast was, responded to by Messrs. P. H. Cox (chairman of the Banks) H. Buckleton (Bank of New Zealand), A. Jolly (National Bank of New Zealand), A.. J. M'Kay (Bank of New South ■Wales), E. P. Yaldwyn (Commercial Bank of Australia), and Alexander Macintosh (late General Manager of Bank of New Zealand). Mr. W. A. Leitch, Inspector of the Union Bank of Australia, proposed the toast of "The Guild." He heartil^ congratulated the members, of the guild on the great progress their organisation had made, and for the spirit of moderation and conciliation that marked their relationships with the banks. The banks warmly appreciated the good work that the guild was doing, particularly in the matter of higher education., The toast was -responded to by Meagre. W. G. Miller (Bank of New Ztaland, Palmerston North), and H. P. Mourant, General Secretary of the guild. The toast of "The Visitors" was proposed by the chairman, and replied to by Mr. R. W. Stevens, Bank of New Zealand, Riverton. An enjoyable programme of music song, and recitation was contributed by : Messrs. L. N. Fleming, C. S. Nelson, Tinriey, 0. -Tuoker, P. Barnes, and R. W. Stevens. Mr. Frank Thomas accompanied at the piano.
