THE GUILD CONFERENCE

The executive council of the New Zealand Bank Officers'- Guild, comprising 23 delegates from different parts of the Dominion, has concluded its fifth annual conference. In moving the adoption of the annual report, the retiring president, Mr. C. A. Mac Donald (Wellington) referred to the steady growth of the membership, which had reached 2087. The year had been one of quiet and steady progress. The guild was now firmly established, and had come to be recognised -as an integral and valuable part of the banking system of the Dominion., Steady improvement, was taking place in the conditions of service in the various banks for which the guild might rightly claim a share of the credit. Reference was made to various activities that the guild was carrying out m the interests of members. The Bank Officers' Guild Beneficent Society was now registered; and about to carry on business. A valuable selection of books had been purchased' for the Guild Libraries. Appreciation was expressed with the result bf the recent examination for the Diploma 'in Banking, in 119 bank officers were successful in gaining passes in various subjects. During the year lectures had been given before members by bankers, lawyers, and business men. The social side of the guild's work was steadily developing, and by means of local sections, members were banded together for their social, recreational, and educational benefit. "The Banker," the guild's official organ, had now been established three years and was steadily growing in usefulness and ---preciation. was made to the fact that the banks had taken steps to introduce uniformity in their note issues, a matter that had been brought before them by the guild. The important" question of endorsements on bills of exchange was being carefully considered by, a committee set up by the guild. In conclusion,, the president congratulated the members on the cordial relationship that existed between the guild and the authorities of trie banks, and spoke with pleasure of the progress the guild had made during the four years of its existence. The statement of accounts showed that the guild was in a strong financial position with an accumulated fund of £1364 16 8 ;4d. Many matters of importance to members of the guild were discussed by the conference. During the sessions the delegates from each of the six banks discussed various matters of mutual interest with the executive officers of their own particular banks.
