The Hon. W. Downie Stewart is to leave Dunedin for Wellington to-day.

Sir Joseph Ward, who has been on a visit to. the South Island, returned to Wellington yesterday. Mr. Herbert Filmer has been appoint--ed manager of the Wellington branch of the Phoenix Assurance Company, Ltd.

Mr. A. E. Stephen, manager of the Chilean Nitrate Committee, Sydney, is due in Wellington by the Maunganui on Monday. He will lecture with lantern slides on "Chile and Its Industries," under the auspices of the New Zealand Farmers' Unifoi.

Mr. F.-H. Mather,,Mayor of Eastbourne, has been ill for some weeks, and last evening he was granted indefinite leave of absence by the council. Councillors expressed the hope:that his indisposition would soon be at an end, and that he would again take up his duties at an early date.

Mr. A. L. Monteith, M.P., was entertained at a. complimentary social in the tramwaymen's recreation room" on Thursday night as a mark of appreciation of his services as secretary of the Tramwaymen's Union in the past four years. A very enjoyable 'evening, was spent, and a presentation of a portable typewriter and a gold albert was made to. Mr. Monteith, with a brooch for Mrs. Monteith. '

Mr. George Owles, whose death is reported from British East Africa, as the'result of a motor accident, was the well-known Otago Rugby wing-three-quarter of the seasons of 1920 and 1921, when he represented his province eleven times, telegraphs "The Post's" Dunedin correspondent.
