THE SUMMER RACES

WELLINGTON CLUB'S MEETING

NOTES ON THE FORM.

(»T "t» LANMLOI.")

Tlwre was a huge attendance at Trentham yesterday, for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting. - The stands were filled to overflowing with a well-dressed crowd, and' the totalisator staff and the tea room attendants had a particularly busy day. There was a representative attendance of horse-owners, including Sir George Clifford. The sum passed through the totalisator amounted to £68,316, compared with £58,029 10s on. the corres-, ponding day last year. ; A TRENTHAM WINNER. . Backers made a' bad start in the High Weight Handicap, for which the six ac-_ ceptors all paraded. Palamon, a fairly useful performer on the flat in Otago, and Santiago were the popular picks. The light-weighted Red Cherry went out to win all the way. She got a break racing along the back, but was the first beaten,- and finished fourth. In a solid-ly-run race Palamon was beaten by Carawock, who was ridden in behind ■ and came away in the straight to win with something in hand. The winner was the least fancied of the six runners, and paid a good price; Carawock was ridden by H. Gray, whose first mount it^was since' his return, and he got a good reception from the crowd on returning to the weighing enclosure. Carawock is trained at Trentham by J. W. Lowe for Mr. 0. Boyle, of Wellington. Vagabond, who was conceding the winner just on two stone and a half, did well to carry his welter weight into third place. NIGGER MINSTREL WINS WELL. The withdrawal of Galliard left Nigger Minstrel top weight in the Fitzherbert Handicap. Although he had never previously won a race, he was sent out a good favourite, and, taking charge half way down the running, won like a good one. The Kilbroney filly Raehael, who did not look ready, was finishing on well, and was closest to the winner at the finishing post. He was followed by the two Absurd fillies, Lady Bentinck and Lady Isinglass. Quiescent did best of the Trentham lot, finishing abont fifth. He was coupled, with Slump, who ■was at the .tail end of the field, with Pantry Maid. Among the other runners was Father's Voice, making his first appearance 'in Viscountess Jellicoe's colburs. He ran well enough to suggest that he will win races later on. Nigger Minstrel ;is the full. brother to Desert Gold." He carried the colours of his breeder, Mr. T. H. Lowry, who is at present in England. A WAIRARAPA WINNER. ' The three best backed horses in the "mile race, the Anniversaiy Handicap, all .finished in the money. The imported horse Royal Divorce (Gray's:mount) was actual favourite, and was in the leading division all the way, but was beaten into third place in a good finish by Suggestion, who was conceding all.his opponents age and weight with the exception of Kinsem. Ths last named ran a remarkably good race under her .welter weight, and finished up fourth' after assisting in the pace-making most of the way. The Riccarton-trained Prince Ferouz, who is j a much improved horse since he went to the South, was only beaten.by a narrow margin. Gay .Juliet was v?ell enough placed at half way, but failed to improve her position at the business end. Suggestion, who. won at Ellerslie, carries the colours of his breeder, Mr. W. E. , Bidwill, president of the Wairarapa Racing Club, and is trained by.'J. A. Farmer.; ' . ' APPRENTICES' 'PLATE TO IHAPOTOA. The imported mare, Maria of Hereford, came in for most support for the race for apprentice riders. She was well placed in the early stages, but gradually lost her position, and was in fifth place at the finish. Racing across the top White Comet had charge, but in the run to the post was beaten by Ihapotoa, ,who drew inside' position, and scored comfortably, after drawing away at the distance, and Star Ranger, who started on the outside of the field. The latter had previously competed in open com- . pany, and looks like being useful in the flack class. Two of his stable mates, Laughing Stock and Black Rod, were in the field, the latter finishing last. Ihapotoa, who had earlier in the season won at Ashhurst, Pahiatua, and Manawatu, will have to compete in open company after running out her hack nominations. She is trained by E. W. Watson, at AjWapuni. White Comet ran a good race, considering that his rider was making his first appearance in public. With a more experienced pilot1 he may win a race at the meeting. The also-started, division included Kilminster, owned by Mr. T. M. Wiliord, who arrived back on the morning of the race, and was present ,to see the bearer of the Zetland spots run. iOUGHREA'S WELLINGTON 'CUP. - 'All started for the Cup, except Mark Time, whose withdrawal was the result of a kick- from his stable mate (Lady Bentinck). This was rather unfortunate for his owner and the horse's supporters. In a good betting race the actual favourite was Enthusiasm, who looked well and pleased in the preliminary gallop. Enthusiasm drew ■ inside position, but never at any part of the journey flattered her backers.' Other well-backed runners in Gold Light, Linielight, and Roseday were all in the picture at the finish. Cold Steel, Ardour, and Winning Hit assisted in the pace-making, and with half the journey gone, were showing out at the head of the field. The top weight was always well placed. He was in front at the distance where his victory was being proclaimed, and he - was only beaten in a fast run race after aigreat finish. with Gold Light and Loughrea, the latter getting up in the last few strides to win by a narrow margin. Muraahi was last going out of the straight with about a third of the journey gone, and was never prominent. Bonetter also failed to run up to expectations. She was at the tail end of the .field about seven furlongs from home. Sunart ran a good race, after meeting with some interference from another runner who came over on to him. He was well back at the finish with Scion, Highland, and Mantua. It was such a close finish that with a little luck Gold Light might have reversed positions with the winner. Loughrea and Suggestion were both sired by imported Kilbroney. Loughrea had in the South, previously proved a first-class performer over ten furlongs, but this wa s his first success over a mile and a half. Last winter he was sold to a Victorian buyer, and was brought to Wellington to be delivered to his purchaser, but the deal was not.completed. He carries the colours of his breeder, Mr. L. C. Hazlett, of Dunedih, who was not present to see him win. Although trained by E. J. Ellis, F. Shaw had charge of Loughrea on the trip. Gold Light is owned by Mr. W. T. Hazlett. brother of the owner of Loughrea. Gold

Light is trained by Stuart Waddell, who, for many years trained for Stephenson and Hazlett (father of the owners of the above-named pair). The gold cup, donated by Mr. Vivian Biddiford, was presented by Sir. F. D. Bell, a former' president of the club. WELLINGTON STAKES TO MOTLEY. v The Wellington Stakes field dwindled down to small proportions. Three of the runners carried the maximum penalty of fourteen pounds. It was generally considered to be a contest between Motley and Tukia. Gaillard showed up in the run to the course, where Tukja shot to the front and appeared to have a winning chance until Motley was given her head at the distance, and, finishing with a brilliant run, soon placed the issue beyond doubt. Both winner and runnerup -were sired by Absurd. Motley carrying the colours of her breeder, Mr. G. M. Currie, of Wanganui, who was present to see her win. Mr. Currie, who is a fairly reliable watch holder, made the time 58 3-ssec. That equals the pre vious best for the race put up by Gloaming and Rational. OPEN SPRINT TO PARQDT. Mireusonta and Razzle Dazzle, the latter of whom will not run at the meeting, were taken out of the Telegraph Handicap. The popular piclcs with backers were Glentruin and Parody. When they were ap- v preaching the course proper the colours of Lovesign, Rational, Lady Fingers, and Wild, Hind, the latter -well out, showed up prominently. Glentruin got through on the. rails at the distance, but failed to sustain her run and finished in the ruck. Then Rational put in a claim and his supporters were pronouncing his victory, when Parody dashed up on the outside and won decisively. Lovesign. who was onlucky in the running, was third, and Civility next. Parody, who has now won three times in succession, is a greatly improved mare. Her owner, Mr. G. D. Greenwood, was present to see her win. As in the previous race, both winner and runner-up were sired by Absurd. ANOTHER TRENTHAM WINNER. ; There were twenty-five runners for the Ruapehu Handicap, after Piquant, St. Augustus,, and Rene Mavis were taken out. The imported filly Merit, making her second public appearance, was favourite, and won brilliantly in fast time from Bugle Note and Entre Nous, both of whom showed galloping ability good enough to win races at the meeting. Muria, Benmure, and Orchid were well placed in the first part, but finished outside the money. Muria , was fourth. Merit has always shown great galloping ability on the tracks, and on her only previous appearance ran third at the Levin Meeting, held at Trentham in the spring. If she trains on she will win more . races. She is trained by S. J. Reid for Mr. Vivian Riddiford, who-pUT-chased her when on a visit "to the Old Country. - .. . ' TRENTHAM HIGH WEIGHT HAN-!
