LOS ANGELES, 22nd January. That there appears to be a conspiracy to suppress evidence at the preliminary hearing against Horace Greer (Mabel Normand's chauffeur), who is charged wath shooting Courtland Dines, was a statement made by Judge Walter Hanby. The declaration \yas evoked by the failure of Mabel Normand and Courtland Dines to.remember a number of things in connection with the case.
Greer, Who is also known as Joe Kelly, is, alleged to have shot Dines in the presence of. two cinema stars—Mabel Normand and Edna Purviance. The shooting, was declared at the time to ba the result of jealousy, Greer, who was Mabel Normand's chauffeur, being in love with his employer. Those who witnessed the shooting later denied statements made by Greer, that he had taken ...the law into liis own hands because he had seen Miss Normand insulted. She stated that when the chauffeur ' arrived at Dines's apartment she went into an inner room to hook up Miss Purviance's dress, preparatory' to going out to dinner, and while doing so heard three shots, and later found Dines Wounded. The chauffeur fled and gave himself up to the police.
