UNIFORMITY OF BYLAWS.
The objections consistently voiced by Woodville.County representatives at the conference held recently to consider the framing of iiniform bylaws against a clause empowering county councils to levy a tax on privately-owned motors, have been upheld. At a meeting of the Dannevirke Council a letter was received from, the Hawke's , Bay County Council covering a communication from the Minister of Internal Affairs, in which it was stated, in reference to the proposal of joint bylaws for the counties between Waii-oa and Woodville, that, after careful consideration, he could not see his way to recommend authority being given to the councils as proposed under section 23 (giving them the right .to tax pri-vately-ownedi cars) and that therefore it was proposed to drop this section and proceed with the adoption of the test of the bylaws with . as little delay as possible: The chairman (Mr. M. 0. Grainger): "Well, it would hardly be dignified, for the Woodville ■ County Council to say ' I told you so,' but as a matter of fact, this is what we have expected from the beginning, and that is the section we have always objected to." The Wairarapa, he added, was also framing bylaws which seemed to be identical with those proposed by Hawkes Bay, and it would be all the better if the area for the.- uniform bylaws were extended to embrace that district also. There was no hurry, and he thought they might well hold the matter of adoption over yet awhile. This course was agreed to.
