ROSENEATH AND KELBURN

10 IHB HMTOR. Sir, —Your correspondent " Quo Vadis " asks two questions: First, method of obtaining signatures to petition; second, comparison with Kelburn's cable car. I will endeavour to answer these.

No. 1: I would point out heresay evidence is very untrustworthy, and I don't believe any of the canvassers for signatures would make false statements, as plenty of true, sound arguments were available, and, even if a few signed Under a misunderstanding, the big majority were sensible enough to read the heading before signing, so the petition holds good.

No. 2: I will give five reasons unfavourable to Roseneath's proposal in comparison with Kelburn's. First, Kelburn's car runs from centre of city j Roseneath's would be a different proposition if it started from Courtenay place instead pi having to take one section (if not two) to Kiosk, ihen changing to cable car. Second, Kelburn's goes up to top of the hill j Roseneath's only to lowest end; patrons would have to walk again up as much hill as they had ridden up. Third, Kelburn's only cost from town to top of hill, 2d; Roseneath's tramfare from town one section 2d, cable car fare estimated l£d; proposed tram fare to top of hill, 2d—s£d; difference in favour Kelburn, up 3£d, down 3d, both ways 6£d each day. Fourth, Kelburu has no quicker way for walkers; Roseneath has; while a rider- goes round by tram .and cable car a walker living in centre by fire brigade station, Roseneath, could walk home as quick and i save the expense of 6£d per day. Fifthly, and "most important, Kelburn's serves three different areas—viz., Talavera terrace, Salamanca, road, and Kelburn, all three having large populations. ' Roseneath has only one, right up top. Besides, the grade, three times as eteep as Kelburn's, will make timid people frightened to ride up the face of the cliff. The popular proposal residents want is similar to Kelburn's, as having Majoribanks, Roxburgh, Macfarlane, Hawker (with large congregation of Catholic Church at top),-Moeller, Shannon, and Hay streets to help Roseneath, and North Hataitai's population to make the trackless tram a paying proposition. —1 am, etc., ■ ■ lifV-n"- « SIGNATURE. 11th December.
