MAY BEATS GRAHAM FOR WELTERWEIGHT TITLE.
(n IEIgORAPH.-^PKESS ASSOCIATION.)
INVERCARGILL, 11th Dec. The New Zealand welterweight title changed hands to-night after 15 interesting rounds, in which Harry May (lOst 41b) proved too fast for Jock Graham (lOst s£lb). Graham's right was bandaged and gave him trouble after the eleventh round, but by that time May had piled up a lot of points. Graham, watching May's right, allowed the challenger to carry the fight to him, and though he scored well in the two first rounds with his left, May took the lead afterwards, scoring at close quarters to the body' and head, but not with much weight; In the second round Graham caught May with a heavy left hook, and shook him badly, but the challenger stalled well. Then May put on the majority of points, doing most of the forcing, Graham rarely risking the lead. In the ninth and tenth rounds he showed to more advant? ~e with some heavy lefts to the head, and he was stronger in the last two rounds.
Graham finished fresher than May, who carried the marks of the fray, but there was no doubt about the verdict for May, which was well received.
After the fight Graham said that May was too fast for him in a clean bout, the winner giving an attractive scientific display. The preliminary bouts between lightweight amateurs resulted: E. Livingstone beat E. M'Neill on points; L. Adams knocked out B. Games in the third round; W. Fewster beat J. Kelly, who: put a knee out in the final of threo rounds.
