SANDERS CUP TESTS

TWO FURTHER RACES. The third and fourth trial races for the purpose of selecting a local boat to represent the Wellington Province in the Sanders Memorial Cup contest, to be sailed in this harbour late in January, were held during the week-end. The winners were Peggy and Eynin. Peggy has now won two races, while the other ;fc\vo'-boats i Eynin and Claire, have a : win each, to their credit. ' The third, test wag sailed in Evans Bay, the course being a mark in front of the Evans \Bay Yacht and Motorboat Club's pavilion to a buoy off Shag Point, thence to a buoy just north of. Shelly -Bay, back to the Shag Point mark,, and thence to the..' starting line. A full-sail southerly was blowing when the race commenced. Peggy drew away immediately,' Claire ■ following close behind, while Eynin dropped back a little. -.Peggy was the first to reach the buoy,' being 15sec' ahead' of Eyniii and 20sec ahead of Claire. On the run down to Shelly Bay Claire found the conditions to her liking, and she assumed the lead, rounding *tfoe buoy 12& ec ahead of Peggy and 206 ec ahead 'of Eynin. The beat back was a bow-to-bow race. Claire made, with Eyuin, for the western shore, and soon established a comfortable lead, but she lost time in setting a leading jib, and Peggy, which had stood over to the eastern side; caught her up and headed her. Thereafter Peggy led the way home, while Eynin assumed second position. The order of the race remained unchanged until the finishing line was reached. Peggy' finished lmin 50sec ahead- of Eynin, while Claire'was 2min 32sec away. The fourth trial was sailed on the harbour, the course being from the Clyde Quay Wharf down to the steamer Rama, anchored off Kaiwarra, and back to the starting line. The breeze was a full-sail northerly. There was little between the three contestants on the beat down to the Rama. At that point Peggy led Eynin by lmin ssec, and Clairo by 2min 45sec. . Eynin, which is probably the best heavy weather boat of the trio, made the best of the running-'on the sail back. The breeze freshened, and spinnakers were set. Passing Peggy, Eynin sailed home llsec ahead of her adversary, while Claire finished lmin llsec later. But for the time lost in setting extra sail, Claire should have been a certain winner in the third test. Credit is due to the skipper of Peggy, Mr. A. Bailey, for his "handling of that boat. Eynin was sailed by Mr. A. G. Crawford, and Claire by Mr. A. Johnson. The judges nr the first race were Messrs. D. Wall and W. Duncan. Mr.. Nigel Blair took Mr. Duncan's place for the second race.
