OLD BOYS IN GOOD POSITION.

As a result of Saturday's play on No. 2 wicket at the Basin Reserve, Old Boys are in a good position in their match against Petone. The suburban team, in its first venture at the crease, scored 141, the only batsman to distinguish himself being Hamilton, the fifteen-year-old member of the team, who scored 58 runs In their reply, Old Boys have lost three wickets for 136 runs, Collins and Bull being the not out men. Neither Cobcroft nor Brice, Petone's opening men, reached double figures, and in fact only three of the suburban batsmen, Corner, Hamilton, and H. E. Nicholls, managed to get more than nine runs. Corner, who scored 18, was going well when he sent one of Barclay's deliveries into Pope's hands, and H. E. Nicholls, who finished up wit* 14 runs, was caught by Barclay, off Collins. Hamilton, who gave a remarkable performance in the previous match against Hutt, again batted extremely well, and gained a> wellmerited ovation. Collins was in fine form with the ball, and was a constant source of trouble to the Petona side. He finished up with excellent figures—six for 46. Duncan, : Lusk, and Barclay were each responsible for one wicket.. Old Boys' response commenced in promising fashion, although Bonaldson had the misfortune to be run out when he wag

10 and Joplin went for none, cleanbowled by Corner. When Collins and Bull became associated they settled down to make runs, and both were unbeaten when stumps were drawn for the day. Bull had reached 43 and Collins 39, and both were well set. Apart from Corner, who took two wickets for 48' runs, the Petone bowlers were not dangerous. Brice and Smyrk had no success with the leather. Detailed scores follow:— PETONE. First Innings. Cobcroft, b Collins 6 Brice, b Collins 5 Corner, c Pope, b Barclay' 18 M.
