WADESTOWN SCHOOL CARNIVAL

Wadestowh was en fete and quite in holiday attire, cm Saturday afternoon, when a grand united carnival was held in connection with the Queen Carnival inaugurated several weeks.ago, to raise money for the improvement of the school grounds. Since the commencement of the carnival keen interest has been displayed by the supporters of the respective queens. Sports Queen, Miss Molly Cook; Flower Queen, Miss Mavis Golding: Fairy Queen, Miss Doris Parlane.

At 2 p.m. a procession marshalled by two capital horsewomen, Miss 6. Plummer and Mrs. Milligan, and headed by the Pipers' Band, left the tram terminus for the mam school. The procession consisted of gaily decorated vehicles of all kinds. The decorations -were most I praiseworthy, and elicited well-deserved compliments. A special and pretty feature of the procession was the presence of the Fairy Queen, who sat enthroned in a beautifully decorated lorry, the ' work of Mr. W. Prince.- She was followed by othe Sports Queen, with her { retinue of sports, all gaily decked in fancy costumes. On arrival- at the school, the procession was again marshalled, and the task of awarding prizes for the best decorations was undertaken by Mrs. Sutherland and Mrs. Milligan, with the following results :— Prams.—Miss Joan Collins and Howard Allen; Miss Isobel .Hunt, Mies Maud Bennet, and Master Jack Leash, whose floral crown was a veritable work of art. Tricycle.—Master Jack Campbell, as golly wog. Wheelbarrow—Master Arthur Mac Donald. Trolly — Master Jack Bennett. Bicycle—Master Jack Bohm. Bride and groom—Miss Audrey' Elliott and Master R. Simpson. The afternoon was spent in jollification. A Punch and Judy show was very much in evidence. Aunt Sally reaped quite a harvest. A shooting gallery was well patronised. Quoits, skittles, too, had their share of supporters. Ice cream, sweets, cakes, jumble stalls, were here, H-here, and everywhere. In fact, every conceivable device, including _a grocery store, was in evidence to beguile the silver and copper coins from the pockets of young and oH. A programme of sports was also gone through, the most important event, the married ladies' race, being won by Mrs. Corkill. A ham guessing competition was won by Mrs. B. Withers, whose judgment of the weight, 131b 13oz, was within half an ounce of the actual weight—l3lbs 12£oz. The Fairy Queen's doll^ was won by Mrs. Alia way. The doll's bed, another Fairy Queen effort went to Mrs. J. Withers. During the afternoon the Pipers" Band assisted materially in livening the proceedings. A committee' of ladies representing the three queens, was kept very busy throughout the afternoon, dispensing afternoon tea. The Sports Queen s stalls were in charge of the Misses Cook, Mesdames J. Withers, and Hardie; the Fairy Queens in charge of Mesdames M'Donald, Stuart, and Parlane; Mr. W. Knight had charge of Aunt Sally; Mr. Corkhill the shootinc gallery, and Mr. Allaway the grocery store. . The proceeds of the carnival > will considerably augment the committee's funds. Already two full-sized asphalt tennis courts are in course of construction, and when these, together with a basket ball court, and a concrete cricket pitch, are completed, the Wadestown school will have a playground | worthy of the district, and second to none in Wellington.
