HOARDING IN FRANCE

IMMENSE RESERVES OF GOLD.

(AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND OABLH ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, 22nd November. The "Morning Post" correspondent in Paris says: "It is a commonplace for enormous hoards of gold coins to remain carefully concealed by, peasants in France. A high Treasury official states that the amount of hidden wealth might be estimated at over 1000 million francs.

"The subject has been brought into prominence owing to the arrest of a Paris dealer, who is alleged in nine months to have melted and sold over two and a half hundredweight of gold coins. It is stated that he is the head of a widespread organisation, whose method is to induce peasants to transfer their gold for payment far in excess of its face value. The evidence indicates that 40 francs are paid for 25-franc gold Louis pieces, which are sold to higher agents for 50 and sometimes 60 francs, when they are again resold to dealers for melting, and further resold to goldsmiths."
