DE MAUNY RECITAL.
It is not difficult to commend the talent shown at the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last evening, when the pupils of Mr. Leon de Mauny and Madame Evelyn de Mauny presented their first invitation recital. The large audience did not hestitate to express its appreciation of the splendid efforts of the individual performers, who contributed to the success of a comprehensive and judiciously-chosen programme. Sev-eral-bright numbers were given by Mr Leon de Mauny's orchestral class, which opened with the overture "Mirella" (Gounod), following as an encore with Tosselli's "Serenade" and a suite of four pieces by Fletcher, "In Beauty's Bower," "Sylvia Dances," "The Pool of Narcissus," and "Cupid's Carnival," and concluding with"Valse Triste" (Sibelius) and Moszkowski's "Spanish Dance " Mr Charles W. Clift was heard in the stirring "Honour and Arms," from "Samson" (Handel), while "An Indian Lullaby and "An Indian Serenade" were feelingly sung by Miss Genevieve Duere who also gave "A Brown Bird Singing.'' Opening somewhat, uncertainly, a talented young, violinist, Master Desmond Lavin, soon entered into the spirit of Beethoven's "Romance in F," and later answered to the demands of his hearers with "Simple Aveu." Mr. Leonard Darnell gave.. "The Magic Flute" and "Tho Lute Playev." Mr. Keeble Thurkettle was quite at home in pianoforte solos, Beethoven, and Sibelius's "Romance." Mrs. Amy Griffin sang "One Fino Day," from "Madame Butterfly " followed by "Sometimes I Wonder." "Like to a Damask Rose" and "0, Thank Me Not" were the offerings of Miss Mona Castle, and Mr.' Huia Tonks contributed "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" (Quiller) and "Youth" (Allitsen). De Beriot's "Fantasia" gave Miss Margaret Connell an opportunity to demonstrate her undoubted knowledge of the violin, and she was equally as successful in her encore number, Beethoven's "Minuet." As accompanist, Madame de Ma;my was eminently successful, and was the recipient of several beautiful bouquets. Her efforts, considerably augmented the enjoyment of a most entertaining evening. ;'■ .
