FUNDS FOR RADIUM

APPEAL MADE AT WANGANUI.

i' WE WANT WORKERS."

On Wednesday, Dr. H. B. Ewen, act-jng-medical superintendent of the Wellington Hospital, and Mr. D. M'Laren visited Wanganui to advance. the Radium Appeal Fund campaign. A public meeting of representative citizens was held during the afternoon, and was presided over by the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. C. Richardson. There were several medical practitioners present, and they briefly expressed tie opinion that it was urgently necessary to procure a good supply of Radium, and have the administration established on comprehensive lines. They viewed the present movement as most opportune and worthy of full support.

Dr. Ewen addressed the meeting from the medical standpoint. Now was the best time to move.in the matter of purchasing Radium, ha said, as the price had recently dropped from £23 to £17 per milligramme, and as there was a possibility that it would increase again now was the time for action':

Mr. M'Laren spoke of the organising work in connection with the campaign. A warm interest in the movement was expressed by Mr. A. Veitch, M.P. He thought that, those present would wish to consult the medical men of Wanganui, as their support would be very valuable in any efforts that might be undertaken. He was in entire sympathy with the work of elevating human suffering. . .

It was moved and unanimously carried that all present form a committee, and that the medical practitioners of Wanganui and 1 public hospital be asked to advise the committee so that the best course should be taken.

A letter from the Radium Fund Committee, asking the Civic League, 'through its various associations, to take up the Radium appeal, was read at a meeting of the Civic League last evening. Mr. D. M'Laren said that all the various associations should take up the matter. There was a feeling that the £10,000 aimed at could be easily raised over such a wide area. But it was not the case. All the associations should pull together, and aid the Radium Appeal Fund. "We want workers, concluded the speaker. "If any of you or your friends can spare the time to come along and work on the committee, do so."
