HUTT COUNTY
MEETING OF COUNCIL.
~. A meeting of the Hutt County Council *ras held to-day. Present: Messrs. H. J). Atkinson (chairman), E. G. Gard, jj. W. Whiteman, A. I. Maekay, and A. <3ampbell. i- The .'chairman announced that the Governor-General, in accordance with jhe provisions of the Public Reserves ;and Domains Act, had appointed the council to be the Paekakariki Domain Board—the chairman and secretary of the council* being chairman and secretary respectively of the Domain Board.
■;t Mr. C... I." Limbrick ■wrote tendering his resignation as councillor for the Horokiwi riding, owing to his leaving the district. The resignation was received with regret, and Mr. Limbrick was thanked for his services.
;.; The" inspector of works, Mr) J. W. Cudby; reported that since last meeting the old Pakuratahi Bridge had been taken down. Some of the ironbark stringers were, he said, quite sound, 'gild these had been cut into lengths suitable for spans of several small bridges, namely, Horokiwi, Clark's, and Cooley's bridges, and a bridge near Burdan's, at Wainui-o-mata. The lastmentioned bridge had partly collapsed owing to the recent heavy traffic over it. Pipes for four additional culverts. on the Monganui road had been ordered. The inspector stated that the LowryDay's Bay road was being steadily improved. He also reported that several new pipe culverts had been put in at Various places in the county, and that the ordinary maintenance work had been attended to.
:'.-A petition from residents and ratepayers, of Plimmerton was received requesting the council to consider the question of providing an up-to-date water supply for the district, and that an engineer's report on the matter he obtained. It was agreed that consideration of the subject be postponed until the new councillor for Horokiwi riding is elected. . ■
;•; A letter was received from the Railway Department stating, in reply to a communication of the council, that the south railway crossing, Paekakariki railway station, was not suitable for the installation of automatic alarms,' and that the Department, therefore, could not give effect to the council's request. ."The chairman remarked that ;it .was a; matter for'-regret that the Department could not see its way to accede to the council's request, which had. been inadgHn the interests'of the'safety of the public.
The letter was received,
A request from the Horowhenua Electric Power Board that the council state its requirements, in respect to the lighting of Paraparaumu and Paekakariki was referred to Councillor Mackay, with power to take action.
It was agreed that n grant of £25 be made -forthwith to the Taita Cemetery"\Bpard,
