NEW.YORK, 2nd November. !■ A revolutionary step in the scientific development of radio was demonstrated by the transmission and retransmission of a signal which made..twenty round trips -from the' station of the New York Radio Corporation of America to Warsaw, in Poland, without the assistance of an operator at either end. The experiment demonstrates that simultaneous acknowledgment is possible in long distance radio signalling. The signal—a dot—was recorded on a tape on each return trip from Warsaw.

The experiment indicated in the above message was presumably designed to test the practicability of, automatically repeating a message back from the receiving to the transmitting station. The distance -between. New York and Warsaw- is about 4000 miles. The problem is purely a mechanical one, as. electrically the necessary apparatus is available. Presumably the system adopted was to use at.each receiving station a tape recording apparatus of the kind that is 'now in regular use, and to utilise the "tape to operate,' but the customary distant control, the transmitter of the station, which is placed some miles away from the receiver. If the method thus outlined can be 'applied in practice, it will have the effect of ensuring the reception of a message, because it will be evident, if the repeat back is clear, that the signals reached their destination properly, and if not, it can be sent again. • ■ ■■ .
