EMPHASISING THE DOCTRINE

LONDON, 31st October. Speaking at a Chamber of. Commerce dinner, Mr. Massey said that anyone ■who examined the Board of Trade returns would see that many commodities which were imported from foreign countries could with a little encouragement be produced within the Empire, and could be paid for by the purchase of goods manufactured. There was no reason why we should not trade with other countries, but there was every reason why we should produce most of our own requirements. He hoped and believed the day was coming when every British ship would be utilised. Whether they would require a Geenral Election in this country to give effect to preference was not for him to say. Mr. _ Massey emphasised the Shipping Committee's fine work. The ocean was the British citizens' highway, and we had to make the most of it. He hoped and believed that as an outcome of the Conference that highway would be better protected than before the war.
