NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BY "SIR LANCII.OT.") Mr. W. R. Kemball was on a business visit to the city yesterday, and returned to Masterton last night. He leaves for the South to-morrow night. . Kilris, whose name appeared among the acceptors for the Spring Plate and Oaks Stakes, will not be at Riccarton. It is not expected there will be a big field in the Oaks at Bicearton. Of the six horses left in three are owned by Sir George Clifford. The Trentham-trained Petunia was allowed to forfeit his engagement in the Hurdles on the opening day at Riccarton, and has been paid up for in the Riccarton Welter Handicap. The jockey J. • Pike will probably ride Harvest King in the Melbourne Cup. H. Jones will pilot Backwood, and J. Brace will ride Paratco. Tiff, who was paid -up for in the Canterbury Derby, has been thrown out of work, and will not be seen out at Riccarton next week. ' "Templar" states that, the brilliant nature of his recent track efforts at Addington have brought Snowshoe into great favour for the New Zealand Trotting Cup. He has never been in such fine racing trim, and with ordinary luck in th e running is bound to take a lot of beating. Laughing Stock, who accompanied Blue Socks South last night, dropped out of the' Stewards' Handicap, and is not running op Saturday. From" Riccarton it is reported that Many Kittle, who has not so far reproduced his three-year-old-form, is an unlikely starter in the Stewards' Handicap. The last of the Trentham contingent for' the C.J.C. Meeting, A. Goodman, with Stream, Printemps, and La Reve, go South to-night. ' The two last named are not engaged on the opening day. Last nieht'g departures for the South included Rouen, Miss Mickey, and Gold Star.
