At Government House this morning, His Excellency the Governor-General presented to Doctor Henry Percy Pickerill, Dean of the' Dental Faculty of the University of Otago, his badge as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, a distinction which His Majeaty conferred upon Dr. Pickerill on the Ist January last.

The Rev. C. Pitkowsky returned to Wellington this morning from Christchurch.

Mr. J. S. Dickson, M.P., of Auckland, Chief Whip of the Reform Party, is visiting Wellington.

Mr. W. Roger, general manager of the Anchor Company, returned to-day from a visit to Sydney.

Mr. A. A. Corrigan, of Wellington, has returned greatly benefited in health from a recent visit to Victoria and New South Wales.

Mr. C. B. Jordan, formerly Undersecretary for Justice, who is now farming in the Tauranga district, is at present on a visit to Wellington.

Mr. F. Meadovjcroft, after eight years' service, has resigned the position of president of the Wellington Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Mr. D. E. Leslie, headmaster of the Terrace School, was elected to succeed him at yesterday's meeting of the society.

Captain L. M'fntosh Ellis, Director of Forestry Services, who reoresnted New Zealand at the British Empire Forestry Conference at Ottawa, "Canada, arrived back in Wellington by the Main Trunk express from Auckland to-day. Mrs. Ellis is spending some little time in Canada; before returning to New Zealand.

Lieut.-Commander James C. Mansfield, R.N., has been "lent to the New Zealand" Government for war staff duties" (writes "The Post's" London correspondent). Commander Mansfield was navigator of the Weymouth under Commodore A. Beal (then captain); when that ship had her rudder blown off by s a torpedo in the action off .Durazzo in 1?18, and was brought into harbour. Since then he has .graduated at the Naval Staff College, served as Assistant War Staff Officer to the Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet in the Queen Elizabeth, and for. the past 18 months has been War Staff Officer to the yiceAdmiral commanding the Ist Battle Squadron in ii.M.S. Barham. Commander Mansfield is the second son of Major Henry W. Mansfield and the nephew of the present Baron Sandhurst He is due to leave for New Zealand on 25th October.

Yesterday afternoon the Minister of Public Works, on behalf of the staff, made a presentation to Mr. George C. Godfrey, Assistant Under-Secretary for Public Works, who has been promoted to the position of Secretary to the Marine Department. In making the presentation, the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Worke, spoke in high term* of Mr. Godfrey's ability. Mr. Godfrey was, in his opinion, a most: able and efficient man, though ho supposed that the outside public would never realise his worth and the work he had done during the last few years in carrying out the administrative work of the Department, with Mr. Furkert as chief, and placing the Department in a line with and exceeding what even its best well-w:6hers could have expected. They all wished Mr. Godfrey every possible success, and he had much pleasure in presenting him, on behalf of the staff of. the Public Works Department, with a, pair of Ross field prismatic, binoculars; also with a handsome Bilver cigarette case, both articles being suitably er,~raved. Mr. Godfrey replied in suitable terms.
