ST. PATRICK'S COLLEGE

ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING.

The students of St. Patrick's College held their thirty-ninth annual athletic •ports meeting at the Basin Reserve yesterday. The •weather was fine, and the track, well laid out by the custodian (Mr. A. Brewer) -was in splendid order; fcut the northerly wind had an effect upon the competitors, and. as a result, there were few notable performance!. Nevertheless, many of the contest* were keenly contested, and some exciting finjshes were ■witnessed. In some cases student* displayed fine athletic ability, and did well in the face of the strong wind. In addition to Anderson and Smith, whose performances were referred to in "The Post" yesterday, Blake performed •xceedlngly well. In the broad jump, in which, the competitors had to face the Find, he equalled the college record of 191 feet 7" inches, which has stood for thirty-one years. Qoodson, also showed much promise. The gathering was splendidly managed, and the large number of spectators had plenty to engage their attention during the afternoon, when the conditions were more pleasant than prior to lunch. The day's sport demonstrated that St. Patrick's College, is still, pursuing a successful course in the physical development of its students. Much credit is due to those who take a special interest in the athletic side of school life. CUP WINNERS. Cups were won as follow:—College Grand Handicap Challenge Cup (highest aggregate in the 100 yds, 220 yds, 440 yds), present holder T. Taylor: Smith, 5 points, 1; Johnson, 4 points, 2. Ward Challenge Cup (presented by Sir Joseph Ward), for 100 yds sprint championship (present holdeir, T. Taylor): Smith and Taylor. M'Carthy Challenge Cup (presented by Mrs. Macarthy Reid), for highest aggregate in the 100 yds, 220 yds, and 440 yds, under 16J years (present holder, S. Dealy): Anderson, 4 points, 1: Krebs, S. points; Gordon, 3 points. Garvey, Kir wan, and Dixon Cup, for best time in 440 yds Grand Handicap (present holder T. Taylor): Hoskins. Lady Ward Challenge Cup, for aggregate in half-mile and mile runs (present holders, L. Day and R. Anderson): Anderson, 5 points, 1." ' ■-..-• Bourke Cup, for the school 50yds da«h <pre«ent holder, F. M'Parland): ■ Blake. The Fay Gold Medal (presented by the Rev. Father Fay, S.M.), for the running broad jump, was won by Blake, and the Hunt Gold Medal (presented by Mr. C. An entertainmsnt was held in the assembly room last evening, when the picture. "Over the Hill," was screened. Music by the college orchestra was much appreciated. There was a large attendance, among thosa present being Archbishop O'Shea.
