SYDNEY'S SKYSCRAPERS

The height of buildings in Sydney has, since the erection some yeare ago of Oulwulla Chambers (190 ft) been limited to 150 feet, and many of the buildings now m course of construction are going risdifc up to the limit. On the ground that skyscrapers are unhealthy, necessitating artificial lighting and preventing the sunlight from reaching- the, streets except when the sun is at its meridian, and on the further grounds that they are dangerous from the fire point o"f yiew, and are the cause of congested traffic, the suggestion has been made that the height of buildings should be further limited in Sydney. It has been suggested that Sydney should follow the example of New York, and pass an ordinance limiting the height of future-build-ings to the width and a half of the streets they front. Some of Sydney's streets, however, are so narrow that the application of that principle -would be unreasonable. Sydney's new buildings are not only soaring much higher, but they are going deeper and many of the old low-level sewers have to be buried more deeply to meet the new conditions. Blasting and- tunnelling in different parts of the city are signs of the more modern spirit.
