o c «TU^ ent financial year in New bouth Wales will close with a small surplus if the State Treasurer's estimates are realised, and while no reduction hi taxation is proposed, efforts to make both ends meet will necessitate drastic steps to cut down expenditure, or as an ugly aJternative, additional taxation; Ihu is one of the salient points of the State 'Budget^-a drab affair on the whole, coming as it did from a treasurer who is one of the keenest financial men in the community. If the Budget oftered the taxpayer nothing very cheerful it gave him no mental jolt. Any reduction in freights and fares is impracticable, in view of the increased living wage and the recent railway and tramway award.
