AT EASTBOURNE

WEEK-END EVENTS WELL PATRONISED.

A large number of people took advantage of the fine weather on Saturday to spend the afternoon across the harbour, consequently the ferry boats carried more than their usual complement of passengers. There were several large picnic parties included, and both tennis and cricket was indulged in on the Recreation Ground.

One of the afternoon ■ attractions was the laying of the foundation-stone of the new vicarage in connection with St. Alban's Church., at which gathering there was a large attendance. The building is to be erected on the south side of the church, and is to cost £1555. Speeches were made by Messrs. Morrison (vicar's warden), St. J; A. White (people's warden), and T. Ballinger, each of whom expressed satisfaction at the progress the church was making. A short service was conducted by the Rev. O. M. Stent vicar of the parish, and the stone was declared " well and truly laid " by Mrs. J. litzsimmons, as representing the St ■A|ban's Ladies' Guild. A silver trowel, with mention of the occasion included thereon, was presented to Mrs. Fitzsimmons, and Joan Urquhart- presented her with a bouquet of flowers. At the conclusion of the service the vicar congratulated the parish on having decided to erect its own vicarage. In the evening the Eastbourne Ruebv Football Club held a" Cafe Chantant " in the Pavilion, at which there Was a very large gathering. The vaudeville side of the programme was contributed by Misses M. Smith, M. Hull-Brown B. Martin, J. Martin, N. Wallace N Cook, P. Aekins, Messrs. A. Hanton. J. Bennett, J. Hartridge, N. Press' E Macmillan, and'V. Marquis, the company being under the leadership of Mr C. Mayer, who had trained the performers in the various iteme given. The soloists were Miss Margaret Smith, Miss Noi-ma Cook, Miss Peggy Aekins and Messrs. C. Mayer and E., Macmillan. The gathering was hejd in aid of the gymnasium fund, and the final item —" I Want Some Money '' —was the call for a bombardment of silver and copper, the total amount raised in this way being £1 10s 2d. Dancing was indulged in between the items, .and kept up until midnight. Yesterday the inclement weather prevented anything like a large influx of visitors, and the Cobar carried out the service throughout the day. the Muritai remaining tied up at Day's Bay
