ORDER OF ST. JOHN

ITS WELLINGTON WORK.

The Order of St. John of Jerusalem in Wellington—a branch of- the old Order, which wap formed in Jerusalem in the 11th century, and is commonly known to citizens as the St. John Ambulance— had its inception in Wellington about 1885, when the first of the first-aid and home-nursing classes were held and many of the pioneers of the movement have worked in it until the present day; the many thousands of men and women, who have passed through the classes, and the patients who have received' attention at their hands, testifying to the benefit of the common-sense knowledge gained. The classes are the work of the St. John Ambulance Association. When the students have gained their certificates, they may join up- with the St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas, in which they keep up the practice of what they have learned in .the classes, and also gain fresh knowledge, through the kindness of the medical men who from time to time give voluntary lectures to the members. All this is called the "ambulance branch" or the Order. Now, as anj" work done by the members is 'pro ulitate ho'nimim" (for (.ho service of mankind) ;uid no remuneration is taken for any heln given or for aid rendered, there is. difficulty in raising funds for the building shortly to be erected at tho corner of Vivian and Tory streets for the permanent home of tho association and brigade. Another branch to he formed in the same building is tho District Nursing Guild of St. John, whoso trained women work so quietly and kindly among the sick and poor of Wellington in their own homes, and of which committee Mrs. W. H. Sefton Moorhouse is the president; On Thursday next, 18th inst., the Comemrcial Travellers' Choir has most generously offered to give a grand concert in aid of the fund for the building and it is hoped that the public, many of whom received help in the epidemic of I^-, will give, their generous support to the raising of funds for the, building of a home for such a worthy cause.
