RIOTS IN COLOGNE

"UNEMPLOYABLE TOUGHS"

BRITISH TROOPS HELD READY.

(PUBLISHED IN IHB TIMES.)

(Eeqeived 13th October, 1.30 p.m.)

COLOGNE, 12th October. Mobs throng the streets, after breaking shop windows, and attempt at plundering in many parts of the city. They consist mainly of the same unemployable "toughs" who were most prominent in the sanguinary Separatist affray at Dusseldorf on 30th September. The possibility that they include armed Separatists increased the danger of the situation. Unemployed who are engagedin emergency work are co-operating with the rioters.

British troops are confined to barracks, and are prepared to meet emergencies. Places of entertainment, restaurants, and cafes are closed. Similar riots occurred at Solingen, where a number of slight casualties were caused by revolver shots.
