PORIRUA DEFEAT SEACLIFF

A great deal of interest wag centred in the match at Pprirua yesterday between teams representing the Porirua and Seacliff Hospitals. - Seacliff, who had won the Chatham Cup the previous day, were favourites, although they did not play M'Dougall and M'Kechie, their places being taken by Cox and Philp. Porirua were also without Ferguson and Shaw. :

The teams were:—

Seacliff.—Rivers, J. Anderson, G. Anderson, 0, Rogers, Cox, Murray, Hanlin, Baxter, Hooper, Burns, Philp.

Porirua.—Tre wick, Gibb, Thompson, Tyson, Kiasock, Hardie, Bourne, Dick, Hughes, Gibson, Lambert.

Porirua kicked off against a strong suri, and were at once placed on the defensive, through a fine rush by the Seacliff forwards. Hooper was almost through, when Thompson saved by giving a corner. This was cleared, and Lambert tested Rivers with a sharp shot. A series of exchanges between the Anderson brothers and the local backs followed, and both teams found a difficulty in settling down, owing to the; keen tackling. G. Anderson tried with a long shot, which just missed, and then Porirua attacked hotly, and onry the fine defence of Seacliff prevented a score. Lambert and Gibson made several good runs, but Rogers was prov; ing a great stumbling-block Then Mur-' ray saved what seemed almost a certain score from Lambert's centre. Porirua were doing most of the pressing at this stage, and Kjssock was making good openings for his forwards, but Rogers and Murray were both playing splendidly in the halves. Bayter and Hanlin, with good combination, were frequently a source of trouble to the home defence, and many exciting moments followed, when Hooper shot well but a trifle wide; Porirua soon returned to- the attack, and good "play between Dick and Bourne ended in the latter shooting well. Rivers was brought out of goal to clear, and a beautiful shot was going through the empty goal, when Murray took desperate measures and, punched clear, a penalty kick being the result. Gibson took the kick, and gave Rivers do chance. Porirua 1-0. Seacliff attacked, and the local team was hard put to it for some time to keep them out. This they, managed to do, and half-time arrived without any further score. ■ .

Hooper opened the second half with a fine shot, which Trewiqk did well to save at the expense of a comer. . Philp and Burns made several good runs, but the defence of Tyson and Gibb proved too good. • A period of line play followed, which was' a welcome relief to the players, as it quietened the game considerably. It was not long, however, before the game became very fast again, but there were frequent stoppages for minor breaches of the rules. SeaclifE forwards were making determined efforts to at least equalise, but Porirua were equally . determined to hold ] their advantage. The football was fast and well worth watching, and the crowd cheered both teams for their fine displays. Tre* ■wick was repeatedly called on to save hot shots, and gave a good exhibition. As'time was drawing near, piny became .•ery exciting, and when Seaeliff obtained three corners in succession it seemed certain they woulcj^equEdise, but Pnrinia kept them out, 'and won on? rf tha best games seen for a long while/ • The referee was Mr. E. Windier. ■ The members of the Sencliff team who have been the guests of the Poriraa Hospital, ■,; return Sduth by to-r.i"M*s boat. > ■ "■' °
