MANAWATU DEFEATED ON SODDEN GROUND.
d INMERCARGILL, Ist September. Between two and three thousand peopiae saw Southland defeat Manawatu at Bugby Park, to-day. The ground- was sodden at the: result o£- r heavy rain, and a very heavy sou-wester was blowin" down field, which affected the play.- A shower fell during the last five minutes of the game ■■•Southland"-kicked-off- against the wmd_and attacked, but using the wind the visitors took the offensive after five minutes and Southland were forced several times. A- Southland dribbling rush mad© ground, and then Hazlett from ths ruck passed to Scott, to: White to Matherson, who scored.- Agnew missed tne kicU. ■ Manawatu resumed the pressure, and from a tight ruck Anderson secured, but dropped the ball. Akiura snapped up the leather and went over s»uverting the try himself. . A little later 0 Bnen picked up. from the ruck and went across. Akiura "s "Jdofe" narrowly missed. A" third try came when Akiura, picking up, passed to Mullins, who sent a bad transfer to -Glendinin*The last-named kicked over,, and, following up, scored: Akiura's'kick-missed"' boutnland were attacking at the dose ol the spell. - . . ...., In the second half- Southland-pressed hard, and several passing attacks-missed narrowly. R, Houghton put in a good run and passed in to Clark, who dropped the balL A Mariawatu player speculated, the ball rolling- back; and Matheson fell on it. Agnew.'s kick hit the post and bounced through. The home team kept up the attack, White jast" missing a try. Then E. Houghton took a speculator from Mulling, and, dashing down the line, scored. Agnew . converted. The best score of the day came-from a light ruck. Hazlett sent to Agnew, to Oilmour, who cut back, passed in to A"new the ball going to Scott, Matheson, and White. Agtiew's kick missed . The game ended shortly after' with bouthlaud 16 points (four,tries,, two of which were converted) to H (three tries, one converted.) . Mr. A. H. Scott Was referee.
