_ The Hon. W.. Downie Stewart, Act-ing-Minister of Finance, has consented to- visit _ Masterton on 16th September to unveil the ■ Wairarapa district's war memorial in. the public, park.
. Mr. J. L. Bennett, of Kapiti Island, leaves to-night by the Wahine on a brief visit to the South Island.
Superintendent B. Sheehan, at present in charge of;the Canterbury district, retires from the Police Forije on the 13th instant, on superannuation, after a. long and successful career.
Mr. E. S. S. Lucas, son of Dr. and Mrs. Lucas, of Nelson, .will be a passenger by the Port Sydney to-morrow for London/where he will complete hi* medical studies at St. Thomas' Hospital
Mr. J. P. Brandon. (Mayor of Otaki) still continues in a very indifferent state of health, and has been ordered by his medical adviser to have complete rest for some time.
Mr. George Mackay, who is severing his connection with the Government Printing Office composing staff after 11 years' service, was to-day presented by members of the staff with a travelling rug. The presentation was made by the Government Printer (Mr. W. A. G. Skinner).
Dr. J. "M. Steward, Bishop of Melanesia, who has been seriously ill in London, is expected to arrive at Auckland about the end of February. Some time ago hopes were entertained that he would be able to leave England in time to' join the Southern Cross on her visit to the mission stations next month,\ but his health following his last operation was such that he had to return to hospital, and will be unable to leave England before January.
The death occurred yesterday, at his residence, 119 a, Tinakori road, of the Rev. Francis Theodore Sherriff, a deacon of the Church of England. The late Mr. Sherriff, who had reached an advanced age, was. ordained in 1875, and the following year he acted as curate at St. Mark's Church, Wellington. He was stationed there for one year, proceeding later to Foxton, where he was stationed until 1877. For some years past he had not had a charge. The funeral took place this afternoon, and was preceded by a service, at the Pro-Cathedral, Mulgr«v« isUcet.
