A BIG HAUL

BURGLARS ACTIVE IN CITY

SHOP ENTERED DURING WEEK-

END.

Further evidence of the epidemic of burglaries which has been experienced in Wellington during the' past few weeks was provided during the week-end, thieves entering the departmental 'store of 'James .-Smith. Ltd., Manners street, and removing a large quantity of -valuable material. Ihe intruders showed almost a meticulous care in the selection of the goods, and did not burden themselves with anything that was not of considerable value. Their attention was devoted to high-class material, such as silks and crepe de chines, many rolls of which had disappeared when the premises were opened for business this morn? ing; but particular attention was paid by.-the thieves'to gloves, which were reremoved in fairly large quantities. In this latter respect, the burglars showed that they were by no mtans novices, as it will be readily seen that the removal of such goods as gloves is more easily accomplished than ' the theft of materials of a bulky and a less valuable descrip-, tioh. The actual value of the articles taken has'not yet been definitely ascertained, but it is'understood that the figure is in the vicinity of *£600." Entrance to the building was gained through a window in the State Coal depot being forced upon. The matter is at present receiving the attention of the local detective force, the members, of which have several similar inquiries in hand.
