SCENES OF VIOLENCE
COMMUNIST DEMONSTRATION,
BERLIN, 15th August. The Communist, demonstrations continue. A mob stormed a prison in Zietz and. released the prisoners. The markets in Herne were pillaged by famished crowds, and at Aix la Chapelle the rioters raided the slaughterhouses and shops and looted the contents. They then invaded the countryside and laid waste the potato fields. Next they endeavoured to break into prison, but the police resisted and in the ensuing fight eighteen persons were killed and two hundred wounded. The Communist leaders endeavoured to establish commissions to sell- foodstuffs, but the crowd was uncontrollable, and swept aside the leaders, and pillaged.indiscriminately.
A Berlin merchant refused to obey, a police order to reduce the price of eggs, and destroyed several thousands.
