CHARGE AGAINST A CHINAMAN.

A Chinaman named William Joseph Gett appeared before the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) and a jury of twelve at the Supreme Court to-day on charges of receiving a number of Capstan cigarettes from two young Kirk, employees of W. D. and H. 0/ Wills, Ltd? The accused pleaded not guilty. , J^lr. P. S. K. Macasuey appeared for the Crown, and the accused was represented by Mr. P. J. O'Regan. Briefly, the case for the Crown wa3 that the accused had induced the two girls, Theresa Budden and Nola Fraser, to take cigarettes from their place of employment and take them to his shop, which was quite close to the factory. The evidence was on the lines of that given in the Lower Court.

Addressing the jury on behalf' -sf the accused, Mr. O'Regan said that it was a rule of practice, although not of law, that the evidence of accomplices in crime must be viewed with a certain amount of suspicion. The evidence of an accomplice was admissible, but it should not be accepted without strong corroboration.

After his Honour had summed up the jury retired at 11.35 and returned an hour later with a verdict of guilty. Prisoner was. remanded for sentence.
