JUVENILE CRIME.
Much of the time of the House of Representatives yesterday was spent in trying to define the causes of juvenile crime.
Various members, including Messrs. L. M. Isitt (Christchurch North) and G. M'Kay (Hawkesßay), considered that a lack of parental control was responsible.
Mr. J. Edie (Clutha): "We are getting away from God, and that is the reason. Thirty or forty years ago the Book of Books was banished from our schools."
A voice: "That is not on "the Estimates." (Laughter.) The Minister of Justice (the Hon. C. J. Parr) blamed the love of excitement and pleasure following the war, and Mr. A. L. Monteith (Wellington East), traced the cause to "Deadwood Dick" "literature."
'You hsve the booksellers' shops absolutely stocked with 'Deadwood Dicks,'" said Mr. Monteith, "and for a few paltry bob these booksellers pollute the juveniles. There is no doubt about it."
