COAL FOR SHIPPING
ACUTE SHOETAGE IN THE NOETH.
(BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
AUCKLAND, 6th August. There is an acute shortage of coal at Auckland for shipping purposes. All stocks have been depleted, and the shipping companies are borrowing coal from one another for present needs. This is due partly to the Newcastle labour troules, and partly to reduced output on the West Coast owing to influenza among the miners. Ordinarily Newcastle supplies arrive at intervals of les3 than a fortnight, but these have been cut off for about four months. The Kauri is due in about a week's time with the first direct shipment since April. Household coal is very scarce, and even Kitchen coal is not sufficiently plentiful. The Gas Company has a large stock, and the gas supply is not being affected.
