BY STRIKE IN MADRID BANKS.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION COPIRIGHT.)

(AUSTRALIAN • NEW 2BAI.AKD CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

(Received 6th August, noon.)

MADRID, -4th August. Banking business has been disorganised as the result of a strike of bank clerks', who demand higher wages. Numbers of clerks brought from England to replace the malcontents have intimidated, 1 and, consequently, the Westminster Bank has closed its doors. Two other banks have ceased business. The banks refuse to reinstate the strikers unless they resign from the union, which, it is stated, is controlled by Communists. Some disorders have occurred, arid there have been twenty arrests. The Government is considering a modified form of moratorium with a view to overcoming the monetary confusion.
