PORT NICHOLSON SILVER BAND.
One o£ the largest audiences assembled this season for the Port Nicholson Silver Band s recitals, filled the Grand Opera House last night. Mr. J. J Drew was in control of the players, and as usual the interpretations were musicianlv. Special interest attached to the opening A^Afn ?„*• Mlchn*f «."comp«ed by.Mr! A Mullinger L.E.A.M., a resident of Palraerston North. The hymn, more in the nature of a reverent fantasie was a delightful number. The overture "De Bayon, by Thomas; the selection, Lortzing ' by H. Round; .the serenata Love in Idleness" (Macbeth); and the march, ' Rovenswood," a Simmer novelty, completed the instrumental side of the recital. Assisting were the Harmonic Quartette (Messrs. V. R. Bennett, E W. Robbins. E. W. Howe, and C. ■■ ™ns?n) who haTmt>nised tunefully in Ihe Ash Grove" (arrane-ed by Mr. Edward Branscombe. of the Westminster Mee_ Singers and 'Dandies' fame), "An Evenincr Pastorale," "Pussy in the Well," and "Spin, Spin.'l' I n all numbers, the voices blended perfectly Mrs. J. Glennie. soprano, san? "Break o' Day' and "Down in. the Forest" in n sweet, cultured voice, used sympathetically. Mr. W. W. Marshall, the newly discovered bas?n brnueht sheer delight with his solos. He first of all jjavn "Th« Bjiidalfiro," and fts recnl's submitted 'Roll On. Thou Dark Blue Ocean." and "So Fair a Flower." His voice was powerful, vet nicely contrnlled. and rich and resonant in tone. Mr. .Tames Osborne sane "Because.' in n liVht tenor voice, and cs nn encore, "Emblem." Mr. Frank Crowther's T)i-ino ancomnpnimentg were airain a feature of the recital.
The celebrated Veil;**. M. Jean Gerardv, concluded his Wellineton season at_ Hie Town Hall on Saturday afternoon with a matinee performance, at which ;» ?'"°at deal of pnthnsiasm was shown. M. Oerardy left for Christ-church in the evening by the South boat.
