AUCKLAND v. SOUTHLAND
NORTHERN BACKS TOO SUPERIOR,
(BI TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
AUCKLAND, 4th August. Auckland defeated Southland by 37 points to 3. The weather was fine, but the. ground was muddy and under water in' patches as the result of heavy rain overnight and. in the morning. The game was more interesting than the scores might indicate. Auckland had the better of the first spell; the opposing forwards were evenly matched, and Southland made some fine rushes, but their backs did not support them, and their efforts were fruitless. The Auckland backs were superior, and their passing was remarkably accurate, considering the state of the ball. The second spell was more even, though towards the end Auckland predominated. For Auckland tries were scored by Badeley (3), Lucas (2). Arnold, Coake, Thomas, Lucas, and Peters. Badeley converted four of the tries and Coake one. Southland's only score was secured by Oughton, who evaded the defence on the blind side.. Agnew'g kick failed.
