BROADCASTING THE NEWS

The idea of broadcasting the principal speech at the banquet to-morrow evening was mooted, and it was hoped to send abroad the remarks of the Prime Minister the Right Hon. W. F. Massey. The Radio Society of Christchureh was approached, but unfortunately it was faced with creat difficulties. The principal one was that the telephone wires gave .not yet been .installed in the Cala-:doan.:^aU,-and W thus there were no means of-"ettins connection with Robert Francis Ltd., in High street, where the society has its headquarters. It would necessitate the installation of wires from the hall -to'that" place,-and time did not permit.it: -Also there, would have to be some experimentation, with the microphones m order that the 1 correct "tune" •would b a achieved, and lack of time was again the handicap. Under ordinary circumstances the person giving an address or a musical item for broadcasting purposes speaks or sings into the receiving horn, but it can be readily appreciated that, under the circumstances where the Prime Minister will be speaking to about 300 in the hall, that would be out of the question (states the Christchurch "Sun"). However, as the openHie of the Arthur's Pass Tunnel is an event of great historic moment to the Dominion, the Radio Society aad the Canterbury Progress League have' arranged for Mr. P. R. Climie. organiser of the league.to write a paper concerning the Midland line and the opening of the tunnel. This will be sent out from the broadcasting station, co that people' as far north as Whanearei and as far south as Bluff will be able to have news of the ceremony. It is quite possible that owners of "listening-in" sets in Australia will also be able to hear of the events of Saturday which are to mark the railroad connection of Canterbury with Westland
