FAST PANAMA SERVICE.

Questions regarding the Vancouver and San Francisco mail services were raised., during the consideration of the Estimates in the- House of Bepresentatiyes last night. The Postmaster-General (the Hon. J. G. Coates) stated that it was 'a question, whether the Dominion was not paying too much for the Vancouver and San Francisco mail services. However, reductions had bgen effected in freights on the carriage of produce amounting to £28,000 yearly, as compared with the previous year's Estimates. Hie Hon. D. Buddo (Kaiapoi): ."Shippers received that reduction?"

The Minister: "Yes." "Feelers" had been put out to see whether it was possible to get a fast direct service between New Zealand and the Old Country, via Panama; but so far no tenderer had been found. Such a service would possibly exclude one of the other services. The vessels used in the San Francisco .and Vancouver services were useful, but not fast. What was wanted was a fast service to the Old Country via Panama Canal, but it, had not been possible to get it up to the present.
