RAILWAYS AND DAIRY INDUSTRY
Complaints were made by several speakers at the N-jw Zealand Farmers' Union Conference to-day as to the hi"h freights charged by the' Railway Department on dairy produce. Mr. A. K. Harding (Auckland), on the other hand, pointed out that the Government had rendered assistance to the dairy industry by arranging for the cheap carriage of butler. In fact, during the war, butter was carried at a rate which did, not pay—an fact, at less than cost. He admitted that the present freight on butter was too high, and should be reduced. There could be no question, however, that the Government had dealt very fairly indeed with them in all respects in the. building up and establishment of the dairy, industry in New Zealand.
