(AUSTRALIAN - NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.)
NEW YORK, 14th July. Six prisoners made a sensational escape from'the Eastern 'Penitentiary at Philadelphia. They overcame two guards, and, climbing the prison wall, slid down a rope to freedom.
i The''escapees then commandeered a. motor-lorry, frightened the driver with a revolver, and drove off. Later they abandoned the lorry for a passenger motor, and presently left that for a speedier automobile, which they seized, and in it made good their escape through a thickly-populated suburban area; Grossing into another State, they summoned a man from a field where he was working to his own house. • They bound and gagged him, and stole 200 dollars and three suits of clothes, which they put on, and then drove off. All six escapees were serving long sentences for burglary and robbery.
