ROME, 19th June. A strange cpV.de occurred at Linguaglossa. While the people were carrying the staff of St. Egidio in procession in the hope of it slaying the flood of lava, people from Castiglione mjUclied to Linguaglossa in ;i body and seized the staff with the intention of carrying it for use in Uie miraculous preservation of their own town. A conflict which followed was so serious that the military were called in to separate the combatants. Meanwhile the bishop arrived and took possession of the holy staff.
