ACCESS TO ROSENEATH

THE TRAMWAY PROPOSAL

DETAILS OF THE SCHEME.

Residents of Eoseneath appear to be Well satisfied with the proposal adopted by the City Council for tramway access to their suburb; the general opinion, In fact, seems to be that the district will ba better served by the inclined tramway than by the lift scheme originally suggested.

The plans of the now project have pot yet been prepared, but a sketch view was presented to the council on Thursday which gives an excellent idea of the lay-out of the track and what the tramway will look like when completed. Access to the line will be made through the ticket office, which will be erected cm the Oriental Bay parade front, immediately opposite the present electric tram terminus. The line will be a direct ono from that point to The Crescent* on the cliff-heights above, and will be about 360 feet in length. The grade Will be an even one of 1 in 1.58, ana comparatively little excavation will be required. A natural depression in the fnco of the bluff lends itself admirably to the construction of the • line, and the spoil from the cuttings will be shot down to the lower levels, where sotte fllling-in will be necessary. A certain amount of concrete work may have to bn done, but there will be no bridges. The track will be a double one, similar to the Kelburn tram, and will probably lie bordered by an attractive grass re serve. The sketch plan also shows t neat little plantation on the parade surrounding the ticket office and waiting ehed. which, if decided upon, would greatly enhance the appearance of tho reserve.

The cars will each accommodate abouttwenty people, and will be entirely olosed in by glass windows. Passengers will experience no discomfort from th. vory steep grade of the line, as th floor of the ca~s will be built up levej The trams will be operated electrical!} by hauling gear, one car taking the weight of the other on the balance pri; ciplo as employed on the Kelburn trap' way. There will be no cause for uneasiness on account of the grade, v/hic will be about three times as steep a. that between Lambton quay and Kel burn, for Bhould a mishap occur to tho cables the cars will be automatically braked by a safety device similar to thnt used on an ordinary lift, clamping on to a centre rail. There will be no stops en route, and the cars will not bo tended by brakesmen. The service will be controlled by a switchman at tho station at the lull-top.
