TRADE WITH GERMANY

QUESTION OF RESUMPTION.

The resumption of trad© with Germany was referred to at a meeting of the Wellington Industrial Association yesterday afternoon, when a telegram was received from the Canterbury Association, stating that Canterbury manufacturers would strenuously oppose the removal of the embargo until all manufacturers were satisfied that such removal would not adversely affect their interests. The Canterbury Association asked the New Zealand Corporation, the parent body, to take the matter up and to support their view; they also trusted that the Wellington Association would do the same. '

The chairman, Mr. L. T. Watkins, referring to . the method which the Cus-. Toms Department proposed to adopt in dealing with lifting the embargo, said that it .was the intention of the Department to protect manufacturers as far aa possible. New Zealand wag not the last country to be tip against it, and as the embargo had to removed some time, he thought the way the Customs Department was doings,it was the best. One member stated that the difficulty had been overcome in Australia by means of a "dumping" duty, which protected the home-made article. Why could not the same be done in regard to New Zealand?

Mr. Watkins replied that the Customs Department was sympathetic, and he did not think that any better method could be adopted than that suggested by the Customs authorities.
