DULL SKIES

FOG AND RAIN GENERAL.

Dull skies and foggy conditions have been experienced in most parts of the^ country during the past twenty-four j hours. Although the stars made their appearance locally for a time last night, the morning broke dull and gloomy. Today, with the exception of a few places in both islands, the skies are dull and overcast, and rain is reported, varying from a misty drizzle to a heavy downfall. The heaviest rain this morning seems to be falling in the Hawkes Bay district. This is owing to the depression located in the North. The depression has passed over the Island from westward of Kawhia, as reported yesterday, and is now centred eastward of the Bay of Plenty. This disturbance is reported to be only a shallow one, and is neutralised to a great extent by a westerly disturbance which now appears to be approaching.

The forecast to-day is for a falling barometer everywhere, with easterly winds, moderate to strong, backing to northerly, • and then increasing northward oJ Hokitika and Lyttelton, and for increasing northerlies elsewhere. The weather is expected to be dull and overcast, with rain probable generally, and rivers rising on the East Coast; snow also may be expected on the high levels in the South.

Since yesterday morning at 9 o'clock 37 points of rain have fallen in Wellington. The technical term point, it may be explained, is a hundredth of an inch, not a tenth; and indicates the depth o{ fall upon a surface. Up to the present time this month, nearly 5 inches of rain have fallen in Wellington. The total last month was only 3.08 inches, so that there has been a considerably greater fall during the last few days than for the whole of last monthi
