BOY SCOUTS

CHIEF COMMISSIONER'S VISIT.

One point is plain in connection -with the Boy Scout movement in Wellington, and that is that there is great need for improving the organisation of tha bojs if good work is to be accomplished. There is little doubt that the movement! meaning as it does both the physical and moral welfare of the boys of the community, is worthy of encouragement, and fee endeavour at present being mad» by the headquarters staff of the movement to reorganise the "whole of the Dominion will no doubt be accorded general support. Last evening, BrigadierGeneral Andrews,- the new Chief Commissioner for the Dominion, accompanied By Messrs. H. Amos. H. Donkin (local Acting-Cbmmiasioner), and N. Grono (local association secretary), made a touu, of inspection of several troops in Welling,; ton, and although the indications plain- i ly pointed to the need for improved J instruction and greater enthusiasm amongst the boys themselves, it was found that the troops are made up of the right material^ boys of a fine tyna who would do credit to such a worldwide organisation. In many cases thera was a lack of knowledge of the elementary duties of a Scout, although' there were isolated cases where a Scout had won numerous handicraft badges and knew his work from A to Z. If properly organised, however, the Boy; Scout movement has a jrreat future before it. At present there are 300 Scouts m Wellington, and the promoters hope to increase .that tp 3000 before very fell^ The hoova visited last niizht were bt. Thomas', Boy's Institute, V.M.C.A., Brooklyn, and Northland, and at each place Brigadier-General Andrews addressed the boys and questioned them, regarding their work.
