AMATEUR ATHLETICS

WELLINGTON CENTEE MEETS.

' The monthly meeting of the Wellington Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A. was held last night. Mr. A. ( B. Sievw/ight was in the chair.' ' '

The harrier sub-committee set up to consider the venue of the Wellington provincial cross-country championships was of opinion that the events should be held at Miram'ar. The clubs in favour were Scottish, Masterton, Wellington, and Olympic, and Hutt and Brooklyn were against. In the matter of providing for spectators, a two-lap course was decided upon, and the course arranged 60 that spectators, by climbing the hills at the back of Miramar School, would be able to follow the race right through. Messrs. Don, Paton, and Sullivan were appointed a sub-committee to circularise the various clubs with a view to securing contributions to the War Memorial Fund.

The N.Z.A.A.A. wrote advising that it was in favour of debarring military defaulters from participating in amateur athletics. It was decided to forward a copy of the letter to each club with a strong recommendation that no military defaulter be allowed membership of any club.

The Hutt Gala Day Committee wrote asking for a rulinjr. In the tug-of-war event, since no entries were received within the time limit fixed, the event was declared lapsed. A scratch team was subsequently entered, and later olaimed the prize by default. The secretary's action in advising that there was no event, and that the entrance money be refunded, was upheld. The Hutt Valley Harriers and A.A. Club was granted affiliation to the centre.

The Scottish " Society and the Pipe Band of Wellington applied for permission to hold a sports meetino- early in the New Year, 1924. The Scottish Society is to be asked to forward approximate or alternative dates on w,hich it ; s proposed to hold, the meeting, as the Ist January will probably clash with other sports meetings held in various parts of the country. Further consideration will then be given to the matter.
